Missing square

I’ve just (re)seen a famous geometry teaser and decided to share it with you. Just take a look at the image below. What happens is that in both cases you build a large triangle out of the same pieces, but in one case a square is missing. How is that possible?

Didn’t I say that? watch the diagonal line, is it really covering the same amount of the little squares in both images? No??

It’s actually quite simple if you start seeing beyond the implied hypotheses that the large figures are single triangles. They are not.
